Outer Park is back with a new set of 12 songs covering all the corners of the musical spectrum – from jazzy psychedelia, brassy funk and grungy trip-hop to moody Americana and stark acoustic folk balladry.

The album name itself comes from the shape-shifting of this set: During the mixdown, one studio intern said to another on arrival, “You won’t believe this album. Every song sounds like a different group!”

On Chameleon, the band also has elevated its original compositions to new levels, with songs coming from all four corners of the group. James Singleton, a prolific jazz composer, contributes his first two lyrical songs (and vocal appearances). Charles Tobermann rocks the album opener with the added punch of his scorching Nashville horn arrangement, and revisits a dreamy “melodrama” from an earlier session. Vocalist Chelsea Austin, also a prolific writer, makes her Outer Park composing debut with a murmur and a shout, while Patrick S. Noonan visits outer space and deep time – and revisits the heydays of San Francisco music.

The band recorded the basic tracks and horns at Nashville’s historic Sound Emporium, with special guest drummer Chris Noonan, and after retreating to their home bases in New Orleans, Orleans (France), Atlanta and Greensboro (North Carolina), added the final layers and sweetening touches. The album boasts of stellar lineup of other guests, as well, including: Kate Musselwhite (violin) and Molly McGinn (vocals) of The Queen Bees, frequent Outer Park guest Jason Marsalis (vibraphone), Abigail Dowd (vocals) and DaShawn Hickman (pedal steel guitar).
